‘The Eternity of
Nebkheperure’
Tutankhamun (c 1341 BC – 1323 BC)
Afternoon Tea with Howard Carter at the Luxor Hotel, circa 1904
“The discovery of the tomb of King Tutankhamen in Egypt is due to a premonition
entertained by Mr Howard Carter, who has been excavating in the Valley of the
Kings and thereabouts for 33 years that he would find what he sought under the
tomb of Rameses VI. Mr Carter states (says a Morning Post special correspondent)
that he is quite unable to explain why be fixed upon this spot. He merely knows that
he was convinced the tomb was there, and that is how he found it. He told me this in
the hearing of some prominent local Egyptians, who gravely assured him that the
spirit of the King hovering near the tomb led him to it.” 14.1
